Should the ‘Walking Dead’ survivors have reason for hope? (TV commentary)

The first season (only six episodes) of “The Walking Dead” (9 p.m. Central Sundays on AMC) has wrapped up, and a theme has emerged: Should the survivors be hopeful for the future of the human race, or not?

Latest Belle & Sebastian disc ‘Write About Love’ a step down, but still good (Music review)

Chance, a commenter on these threads, feels that Belle and Sebastian’s October release, “Write About Love,” is weak; I think it’s decent. Actually, we’re both right. It may be weak by B&S standards, but it’s decent by the standards of pop music in general.

X-Files Season 3

All 24 episodes of ‘The X-Files’ Season 3 (1995-96), ranked

TV review: In its third season, “The X-Files” hits its stride. There are fewer clunky episodes; it’s now a well-oiled machine.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1’ does its artistic best with the Horcrux quest (Movie review)

After the heart-racing wonder of last year’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” it’s time to take a deep breath and slow down for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” And — yawn — find some Horcruxes. The sixth movie had the pacing and plotting of a final chapter, so this seventh movie feels like an emotional […]

‘Paranormal Activity 2’ even better than the original (Movie review)

Shaune, a commenter on these threads, wrote about a year ago that he liked “Paranormal Activity,” but if they made a sequel he would hate it. Well, the sequel is here, but I think he and many other people will like it. I certainly think it’s a significant step up from the first movie, which had a […]

Love hurts in a galaxy far, far away (TV and comic book commentary)

Two surprising love stories were revealed recently in “Star Wars” stories. In Friday’s “Clone Wars,” (8 p.m. Central Fridays on Cartoon Network), my favorite original “Clone Wars” character, Ziro the Hutt, is revealed to be shacking up with Sy Snootles (the alien singer from “Return of the Jedi”). And in “The Force Unleashed II” comic book, […]

First episode impressions: ‘The Walking Dead’ (TV review)

Here are my first episode impressions of “The Walking Dead,” which airs at 9 p.m. Central Sundays on AMC. 1. It looks like I’m in the minority on this one. “Walking Dead” is already a huge hit for AMC, and people seem to be loving it. It’s certainly not bad; it has that same stamp of capital-Q […]

All 25 episodes of ‘The X-Files’ Season 2 (1994-95), ranked

TV review: Here are my rankings of the 25 episodes of “The X-Files’ ” second season — the year it became a mainstream hit.

Fall TV 2010: The worst batch of new shows ever? (Commentary)

It’s worrisome that the 2010-11 season is off to a bad start, because TV doesn’t tend to bounce back easily — good TV tends to beget more good TV (note the golden age that spiked in 1999 and the mini-golden age that spiked in 2004), and bad TV begets more bad TV.

Refreshingly sunny people of ‘Parks and Recreation’ are more enjoyable to watch than ‘Office’ mates (TV commentary)

I’ve tried to stick with “The Office,” but I’m just not laughing lately. I thought the show was funny and somewhat original (although it spun off from the British version, it developed an American voice) when it premiered, but now it strikes me as depressing and tired. Another Matt introduced me to an alternative, though: “Parks […]
