5 random odds and ends (Commentary)

1. In “Return of the Jedi,” when the Ewok (I believe it’s Paploo, but I can’t check it because I don’t have my “Star Wars” library moved into my new place yet) jumps on the speeder bike, he immediately knows how to drive it. Specifically, he immediately knows where to find the override function that […]

‘Nick & Norah’: One movie that’s better than the book (Commentary)

My friend Ally wondered the other day why filmmakers can’t just stay true to the book, especially if it’s a good book. I had mentioned that “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist” was my favorite movie of 2008, and she said she hated it because the book was better.

So much for the Jedi Purge: In ‘No Prisoners,’ Traviss introduces more spin-off Jedi (and I’m not complaining) (Book review)

I’m not going to argue that the “Star Wars” prequel movies are as good as the original trilogy. They aren’t. However, the prequel era has added layers to “Star Wars” we couldn’t have dreamed of when it was a simple — albeit great — drama of good versus evil back in the early 1980s.

‘Bruno’ is brilliant, but it’ll bring you down (Movie review)

Continuing gay week here at my blog, I saw “Bruno” last night. Here’s my conclusion: Sacha Baron Cohen is a brilliant performance artist. And don’t see this movie.

OK, fine, Dumbledore is gay. But Buffy is straight, dammit (Comic book commentary)

I don’t think I’m homophobic. I believe gay people should have equal rights to straight people in every respect (marriage, serving in the military, etc.) And I think Ross Mathews is the funniest of “Chelsea Lately’s” roundtable guests. All that having been said … When “Harry Potter” penner J.K. Rowling announced a couple years ago […]

‘Dead Like Me’: The best show ever about a dead girl named George (TV review)

Ellen Muth is one of the harder to categorize actresses out there. As George Lass — the audience-surrogate reaper on “Dead Like Me” — she went around with a depressive look all the time. Of course, that’s why I and other viewers liked her: She looked like we felt on our worst days. She also […]

My prediction: We’ll get another ‘Harry Potter’ novel someday (Book commentary)

The “Harry Potter” saga is confined to Harry’s seven years at Hogwarts, plus the flashback memories — via Tom Riddle’s diary or Dumbledore’s Pensieve — and the epilogue that shows Harry and friends as adults. But was it really the end when “Deathly Hallows” was published two years ago?

5 random items of note (Commentary)

1. Do you ever get a Facebook friend request from someone you’ve never heard of? I usually just ignore it. This is kind of unfortunate, because now I have no chance of becoming friends with that person (I certainly won’t get to know them outside of Facebook). And I would probably end up liking them […]

6th ‘Harry Potter’ film is a beautiful work of art — and sometimes it’s even a bit funny (Movie review)

J.K. Rowling did her best writing on “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” and the filmmakers rise to her level to make the series’ best film by far. When a much-loved piece of literature is adapted to film, I sometimes worry that the filmmakers will try so hard to get it right that the end product will […]

I like ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ well enough, but I don’t love it (Movie review)

Remember that scene from “Election” when Tammy Metzler steps up to the podium and encourages the student body to just vote for whoever they want to, or better yet, don’t vote at all? You should, because it was the best scene in that movie.
